I had intended to bring all that stuff along this weekend since I'd be at the swap meet. Even though that event is postponed I think I'll still make the run down. I can hit the museums and MHC. The museum by the airport has a Piper Tomahawk that I trained on, and I need some details for an RC model.

Man, that makes me feel old, knowing a plane I used to fly is now a museum piece!

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Send me a PM with timings, if the weather is good Saturday, plan on a few hours flying in the AM, then back to the workshop.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

He is on schedule actually. He must do his fiberglass work in a garage or something, as he said it would be late May before it was warm enough.

Does he have a website Kevin? Or a price list of what he makes?

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Just google Leo Spychella, I think he operates mostly from his own thread on RC Scale Builder, and sometimes on RC Universe. Hard to get ahold of at times, and think he's a one man show, so not fast, but man, does he do some good work. My TF Giant Scale P-51 came with his cowl, scale exhaust stacks, etc. Really added to the looks.
I've now got the proper robart gear legs, so I can go full speed ahead on this build. Wing tube as well, so standby for some wildcat wings!

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Well good news, the new gear leg is the right sprocket size for the chains, got everything set up and tensioned, only one issue. The gear legs sprockets are at an angle, whereas the air cylinders are not. This is causing binding of the chain drives, at about 80% retraction. Going to have to go over the instructions again, but pretty sure everything is set up according to them. Worst case, I'll have to cut out a portion of the bulkhead the cylinders attach to, in order to allow me to angle them back slightly to match. Nothing major, but annoying. In defeat, I put the fuse aside, and framed up the left wing, I'll download the photos tomorrow.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

While getting the chains setup on the landing gear was easy enough, the gear won't effectively run through its' full range of motion, due to an angle misalignment. I suspect that the only way to correct will be as previously mentioned. Needing a mental break, I framed up the left wing last night, and this morning have progressed with most of the sheeting. Construction of the wing is very standard, two spruce spars, tapered at the tips, with 3/32 shear webs full length of the wing. Once the top is fully sheeted, I'll install the tubes for servo wires, work on the flap and aileron servo mounting, and I can sheet the outboard portion of the wing, up to the wing tube area. The root rib, 1/4 ply, is only friction fitted in place, as it will have to have a slight angle to match the dihedral. Once the right wing is complete to match the left, the wings will be fitted to the fuse, with the wing tube, dihedral checked, and then the tube sleeves can be glued in place.

Good grief! That gear is really being a PITA.
