It is finicky, but to be expected, and I should have anticipated that any amount of twist would cause issues. All part of the building process. Meantime, left wing is fully sheeted on top, spar forward on the bottom, time to get going on the right wing!

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

With a rainy sunday AM, that means a building day. Left wing on the Wildcat is in place, everything checked, and now the wing tube has been epoxied in place, and the angle/sweep of the root rib confirmed. Rather than risk a big gap somewhere, the root rib throughout the wing construction was left unglued. Once the epoxy is dry, I can slide out the wing, cut the cardboard tube to length, and glue the root rib in place. Next will be the construction of the right wing, and getting it's wing tube done.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Coming along nicely!

I finally stopped waffling on the markings and sent an order to Callie the other day. Based on past orders I should have the decals before the end of the month.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Cool. Just installed the ply flap hinges, aileron hinges all seem to be missing, but they're drawn out on the plans, so will cut those out today, and install. Just about done framing around the servo hatches, and drilled holes for the nav lights, if you wish to install a set, she'll be all setup for it. Wing tube is fully set, alignment was great, so motoring ahead full speed.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Left wing is fully sheeted, leading edge on, and sanded, wing tip to go.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Well, I just had to take a look at the flap setup, it's rather unique. So once I got the wing tip on, planed and sanded to match the airfoil, decided to assemble the flaps. I used a long length of brass tubing for both the wing mounted flap hinges, and the ones on the flap itself. I'd already aligned and glued in the wing hinges, using the brass tube, so hoped that the same method would work well for the flap mounted hinges, and the fit would come out right. Sure enough it did, a very easy way of doing things. The plans call for nuts and bolts at each hinge point, but not a fan of that. The threads on the bolt will wear on the ply hinges, so I'll cut short lengths of the brass tube for bushings, and then insert the bolts with locking nuts. By cutting the brass tube slightly long, that will ensure there won't be any friction on the hinges themselves. I'll insert thin washers between the two hinge points, that will minimize any wear and binding as well.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Sweet!

You know, I had not even considered lights until now. My only experience with them so far was... "not pleasant". I had the E-Flite Super Cub, and installed the optional light kit. It was a major PITA and added several days to the assembly. In the end the lights were almost invisible in daylight! I know the newer light kits are much brighter, but it's still extra wiring to connect at the field. On the flip side, seems a shame to leave them out, with all the other details that ARE going in. I'm gonna have to ponder this.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

The kit we got for Leeann's Cessna 182 is great, fully complete, all LED, and very bright. Came with the two landing lights for the cowl, Nav lights and strobe. The strobe is particularly noticeable, and we've flashed things up with the lights off, you're definitely going to see them! We're in final stages of the Cessna now, I'll hook everything up in a day or two, and take some video. At the very least, your Wildcat will have everything setup so that lights can be added later.
