Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Hmm I have this handicap, known as the military, and they seem to think I actually need to show up at work on occasion! lol I'm swamped at the moment, work, still have a house to maintain, etc, and actually get to fly once in a blue moon. I've got 3 of our own aircraft at about 95%, and really want them out of the house, and into the RC hauler ASAP, hopefully end of this week, that will free up enough shop space that I can work on more than one thing at a time, so that while resin is drying on one, I can work on the other. The Wildcat isn't mine, so no way am I going to rush the build, it will be done right, done as best as I can do it, and she'll be ready when she's ready. Certainly not june-July time frame, and I'm pretty sure early fall would be a more likely guess, but as you know, once it's all put together, glassed and primed, that's the 50% mark. It's all the paintwork and details that can eat up a ton of time!

And the guy he's building it for isn't putting any pressure to get it done! I'm still scared to death I've bitten off more than I can chew. So while Dave is building, I'm sharpening my flying skills.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Have to say, I love the flap setup, it's very cool. Wings are extremely light, so roll rate should be fast, something to think about when setting up control throws. Given the wing area though, and the huge flaps, I think she'll handle nicely.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Pics soon, but the left wing got it's upper surfaces glassed tonight, and prior to glassing, not one bit of filler required! A testament to the laser cutting job, and taking the time to really do things right. I'm very happy with the results. Bottom of the wing looks to be the same, nil filler required. Maybe I am getting better with age!

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Given the frustration with the landing gear, you were due for a "win"!

Let's see: light wings, "barn door" ailerons... yeah, I think I'll be keeping the throws on the ailerons dialed down. The ol' Wildcat was never known for its roll rate!

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Some shots of the Wildcat's left wing, got the upper surface glassed last night, and the lower this morning. Next is finishing the aileron and flap, once those are done and installed, servos will get hooked up, and then I'll stop and do the right wing up to the same point. When all that is done, I'll get the tail surfaces glassed, and get to work finishing the fuselage, and get it ready for glassing.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

One wing with it's first coat of primer. Will get the underside done tomorrow, and get going on building the other wing.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Don't know how hot it was down in Halifax, but it was hot enough here that I figured any spray paint would be dry long before it hit the target. At least that was my excuse! I settled for putting some decals on my Piper Tomahawk and charging some batteries for tomorrow.
