I can do either, so go with the version you want! Just kicking myself for not checking on the differences beforehand. Must be getting old!

Vertical stab is now sheeted. Next will be sorting out rudder, tail wheel, and elevator controls.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Let's leave it & go with a Wildcat V. I've been waffling all along anyway. Somewhere I'd seen photos of 881 Sqn planes (Wildcat Vs) with invasion stripes. While the stripes are kinda done to death... Seeing them on a Wildcat should stand out!

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

there is a book for sale at the Shearwater Aviation Museum, shows a Wildcat (Martlet) in RN markings, I'll have to look through and confirm the author was a Wildcat pilot, and then I'll send you all the info on it. It's not heavy on photos of the aircraft, more about the pilot's life flying off of carriers.

Possibly "Wings on my Sleeve", which would be Eric Brown's memoirs.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Okay... When we get to the point where markings are relevant, I'm going with a Wildcat V from 881 Sqn., JV375 "5V". Flown by Lt. Cdr. Digby Cosh DSC RCNVR from HMS Pursuer when he shared a victory against an He-177 whilst escorting a convoy to Murmansk. Cosh was CO for 881, and also participated in Operation Tungsten against the Tirpitz. 881 also took part in Operation Neptune, protecting the Normandy invasion fleets from u-boat attack.

Cosh ultimately died in a training accident at HMS Niobe, flying an F6F Hellcat/Gannet.

Several other Canadians were active in 881 Sqn. on Pursuer as well.

There are no illustrations of this plane that I've been able locate, so we can base the markings on similar units. And we'll take it one step further and go with the invasion stripes that would have been applied for Neptune.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Sounds good, I'll do some research at the museum, and see what I can come up with. Have to post some pics tonight, I've got the fuel system sorted out, the throttle and choke servos are mounted as well. For the retracts, air tank is mounted, as well as the pressure indicator and fill valve. Have a couple of options for the air control unit and servo, might be able to get that installed tonight. I've also located where the rudder and elevator servos will go, in the tail. Once I get a tube run for the wires, I can get started on sheeting the belly from the cockpit aft.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Some pics of the latest progress. The firewall setup allows the entire propulsion system, engine, fuel, throttle, choke, etc, to be removed for service. Once removed, the entire air retract system is also easily accessed for maintenance as well.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

That's a slick arrangement! Will certainly make life easier.

The missing (chain) link(s) arrived on Friday! Robart's customer service seems pretty good. Can't wait to see how to retracts work.
