Some pics of the cockpit work, including the aft bulkhead, gear stowage/fuel tank area, and the rails that run from the aft bulkhead to the rudder pedals. Sides I've started painting, but haven't installed. Here's the issue, there's a 1/2 bulkhead in the middle of the cockpit. I either have to cut it out, partially, or all of it, to run the sides, or work around it. I'm hoping that I can cut out the upper portion, to the width of the stringers, and enough of the lower portion to fit the side consoles, and cover it all. That's my first choice, chime in everyone with thoughts. I'll post some pics later of the instructions for the kit, especially the drawings and notes that look like a six year old did them. Frustrating, but the kit parts themselves are fine so far.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Sheesh! What a pain in the backside. Still, given the lack of popularity of the subject I'm amazed there was ever a cockpit kit produced.

My vote goes for whatever gives you the least grief and has the least impact on structural strength. Once the seat & pilot are in place, some of that deeper stuff will be hard to see anyway.

Oh btw... Was moving some stuff around and discovered I still have the tail wheel! It is now in with the instruments and will go out tomorrow.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Funny, I install a tail wheel! lol From my wheel collection, but it took a fair bit of drilling out, good enough for a temp though. Should get the cockpit floor in tomorrow, and sort out the sides, which then gives me my limits for installing radio gear. Tons of room though, but want to make sure it's all very easy to access. I'll have to study up on hatches and such, if I need a hatch for something, might as well have it in a scale spot and size.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

In between epoxy work on the T-34, I'm sanding the fuse on the Wildcat. I want to glass the turtledeck, and upper fuse, ASAP, to ensure there's no warping around the cockpit upper section, as I've removed the 1/2 fuse bulkhead that would interfere with the cockpit kit. Stringers are still in place. Once the fuse is glassed, I can cut use the 1/2 bulkheads as templates, and cut pieces to fit between the stringers, which will add strength, and give me more glue surface for the cockpit sides.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Some shots of tonight's progress, cut 1/4 in thick pieces from the removed 1/2 bulkheads, then glued those back in place, for added support. I was then able to glue in one side panel of the cockpit, and I also setup the bracing for the cockpit floor, and got most of that installed. All necessary wiring, receiver, switches, etc, can now run underneath the floor, and not be seen.

I'm hoping it will maiden at Shearwater! She should have pretty good grass field performance as well, tires are huge, and the gear is pretty substantial, with good travel.

Shhh, it's a secret! I'm doing a Top Flite T-34 for Marc Cayouette, but don't tell anyone. I put a build thread up on here for it.

I figured we'd test fly from Shearwater. The asphalt makes me nervous as all my r/c taildragger experience is from grass, but with all that real estate available, it's perfect.
