Re: Deitchman 1/3 Fokker EII

I wish I was retired!!! Imagine the building I could do!!!!...... I am just a barely employed Alberta oil field parts and equipment manager....... Mon-Fri 8-5 and on call 24-7-365....... I just ordered a 10m roll of Linen Solartex from AMR...... Very good prices considering the CDN dollar.....

Re: Deitchman 1/3 Fokker EII

Received my 10M roll of Linen Solartex from AMR. AMR is a good Canadian source for building supplies, my order was shipped same day and I received it a few days later. I was able to cover the wings and get the rib stitching on. On the wings I am using my own home made rib stitching. If you look closely at the 2nd picture you can see the pencil outline of the Maltese cross. The white and black is satin Behr Ultra Premium latex. The 3 colours look great together.

Re: Deitchman 1/3 Fokker EII

You said earlier that you decided to install ailerons.
I am always amazed how those old-timers got away with wing-warping for
lateral control.
The wing would have had the structural integrity of a flattened tent,
and would have been always out of rig.
Even putting ailerons on the original Fokker EII would have caused aileron
reversal.

Re: Deitchman 1/3 Fokker EII

I saw a smaller electric Eindecker fly at our field. He had wing warping and I was surprised at how much control he actually had. I agree that the rigging would be an issue. Even without wing warping my EII will still have a lot of flying wires to hold the wings on! I have completed the R wing with all its rib stitching and big black Maltese crosses. I have also finished covering the L wing......that's ALOT of Solartex! I will finish the rib stitching and painting on the L wing before I go on Christmas holidays.

Re: Deitchman 1/3 Fokker EII

Are you going to dope those wings? The reason I ask, I tried Solartex on a glider
wing once. I was disappointed because it imparted NO rigidity to the structure,
and it was heavy. My suspicions about it not being airtight were confirmed when
I recovered with SGM Silkspan--the glider flew much better. I have yet to find
anything that reproduces the old doped fabric look as well as silkspan, and lends
some rigidity.

Re: Deitchman 1/3 Fokker EII

I use Minwax Satin Polycrylic as a clear coat. It keeps the Solartex nice and tight. I find that the Solartex does add a measure of strength to the structure. Balsa USA recommends using Solartex or a similar FABRIC covering on all of their models. A friend ignored that and covered his B-USA 1/4 Nieuport 17 with silver Monokote........ the model came apart on its maiden flight.....

Re: Deitchman 1/3 Fokker EII

We use Americana, comes in a spray can from Michael's, and it's avail in matte, semi-gloss or gloss. Matte is perfect for warbirds, seals things up nice. All of my solartex I've always purchased from AMR, haven't had much in the way of sagging, but all of them do get a coat of clear, so that might be why.

Re: Deitchman 1/3 Fokker EII

AMR does have a very good selection of Solartex and the prices are great also! I always check with them first before I go across the border.
Both wings are complete now. Rib stitching, crosses and clear coat. I wanted to have them finished before I went away for Christmas....... I am ahead of schedule!!!

HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND A SAFE AND ENJOYABLE NEW YEAR!!!!

See you in 2017!!!
