Bent my shaft!

I bent the shaft on a Turnigy D2836/8 motor. It's a 4 mm diameter shaft and much to my dismay HK don't carry replacements! I bought a couple of SK3-2836 shaft sets thinking they would work, but no such luck. the end the prop adapter goes on is machined down to about 3mm, it has a flat in the wrong place and the groove for the retaining E clip is at the wrong end.

The only 4 mm shafts I have been able to discover that look suitable seem to be all in Florida with hellacious shipping charges.

Any suggestions where I can get something somewhere in Ontario (preferably)?

Even if I could get a length of 4 mm steel rod I'm sure I could make one.

Re: Bent my shaft!

4mm is pretty close to the 5/32"? inch size in piano wire.

Re: Bent my shaft!

Hi Dave, I searched Hobby Hobby for 4mm shaft, and they have quite a few choices. They look like shock shafts, and a few motor shafts. Lots of different lengths to choose from too.

I can't copy and paste the results of search page. Just search 4mm shaft in the search window.

Good luck. Daren

Re: Bent my shaft!

Brushless shafts are usually ground to just a few thou under the 4mm so that you have a press fit. Music wire being "close" won't work in my opinion. As you say the replacement shaft that you have has the C clip on the wrong end.... Switch ends and if the flat doesn't match then make your own flat ..... Have done it before and it will work.
Just make sure the shaft is long enough so the collet prop adapter clips all the way on

Re: Bent my shaft!

I have HK shafts in a package marked "Park 480" & they are 4 mm X 50 mm, but no lock ring groove. Looks like they are designed to use a locked collar (like a wheel collar). Flats are ground in at the 2 thru 4 mm mark & 33 mm thru 38 mm mark. Might be able to cut a groove with either a thin cut off wheel or file while rotating the shaft in a drill.

Re: Bent my shaft!

Many years ago my dad straightened the shaft on my nitro motor for me. He chucked the bent end in a lathe and kept tapping the other end until it ran straight. I have tried this method on some other things and it works great.

Re: Bent my shaft!

This might sound kind of funny but I broke the shaft off of a 4mm motor I had and like you couldn't find a replacement...after looking for about a week I grabbed a Philips screw driver off my shelf and put it in the bell housing and It worked!!! I took my dremel and cut it to lengh, carefully cut the clip groove and set screw notch and it worked flawlessly.

Re: Bent my shaft!

I used to tear apart old printers and such as they provided hardened shafts of different diameters. That may be another source.

If nothing works out I can have a boo through my stuff and see what's available.

Re: Bent my shaft!

If you find yourself looking for a 3.17mm shaft they can be found in old cd rom drives. the lazer assembly rides on them.
