Switching from Mode 1 to Mode 2

Dear All,

I have been RC flying for 46 years and have been flying Mode 1 that whole time. Having said that, I instruct Mode 2 (because I can) and I recently started flying an indoor Blade Nano helicopter and it's Mode 2.

I am thinking of biting the bullet and permanently switching over to Mode 2. Does anyone have any experience of this? Will I regret it?

I am thinking of getting serious about pattern flying again and in the old days (when I was taught by Ivan Kristensen) the idea was to separate pitch and roll sticks. He flys Mode 3 which is really just Mode 1 for lefties.

When I get into a serious aerobatic situation am I going to automatically start flying Mode 1 again and get into a lot of trouble?

Re: Switching from Mode 1 to Mode 2

While I haven't had to switch modes, I have experienced changing over from thumb flying to pinching. My mentor offered up some great advice, "commit to doing it for a year".

It was awkward at first, I spent a bit of time on the Sim getting used to the change. First actual flight, I started by thumbing it, and when I realized what I was doing I switched to pinching. Haven't had that happen since.

I believe if you commit to the change you'll be just fine.

Re: Switching from Mode 1 to Mode 2

I think the saying "I would rather fight than switch" comes into play here. I have flown both mode one and two plus single stick. When I flew mode one, the long stint with mode two always got in the way. This caused a lot of near misses and a few crashes. If it works for you do not switch. I have a couple of small heli's that can be switched by just repositioning a leaver.
