I'm also relativeley new to scale work and I'm a fan of this magazine
Not only are the quality of the articles and photos very high, but it's devoted entirely to scale.
http://www.rcmodelworld.com/ is a sister publication and not bad, though not as focussed on scale.
Both are different from the US magazines (or most of them anyway) in that they don't do ARFs and they are actually critical in their reviews. You'll see a kit or plans get trashed now and then, and each review takes a hard look at the item being written about.
I've dumped all my subs to the US mags as they read like a collection of media releases.

MANY of these guys sugested getting a hold of Dave Platt's video series
I checked Dave's website out and the videos seem to be a tad pricey, so I was hoping to find somebody with the tapes that they would be willing to part with. No joy. I must have seen something shiny, and had my attention taken away from my mission and forgot about it. I guess I'll have to look into calling Mr. Platt
