Making piston rings at a Frank Bowman or Gavin level involves serious dedication. These guys are skilled machinists. The difficulty I think would be in making a consistent product over and over again. To be honest I always thought Frank's rings were under priced.
On ebay "gaviscool" lists a ring for a Saito 56 at $19.00, shipping to my door can vary from $6.00 to $13.81.
Bill, the exchange rate from British Pound to Canadian is brutal! Suddenly the USD exchange rates are acceptable
Well, at least we do now have an option.

Re: Piston ring supplier to replace Frank Bowman!

I am sure it is not too hard. Likely half a thou tolerance would be ok. I am not sure about the pinning hole though. I have a turret lathe (Hardinge Chucker) that would do it nicely, but am not sure of the details needed. I only have a few ringed motors, and I don't expect them to wear out any time soon. It would likely make money if you can make 10 or so at a time if you could get enough orders with customers that are not impatient. (not me, I am retired)

Re: Piston ring supplier to replace Frank Bowman!

Not sure how difficult it would be either, except Frank did it for years and developed quite the following and reputation. Not once heard any complaints and quite a few praised the increase in performance over OEM.

Likely due to attention to detail and QC.

The fact that covered such a huge range of different engines, along with custom work and in one case confirming my specs before sending out the ring meant to me he cared for what he did. I can only hope someone can prove equally reliable.
I know there's money in aviation........I put it there!

For A good Ring $30.00 is great . Some rings you can't buy from the manufactures will really help.
