Hey guys, don't be a bunch of "fair weather" flyers!!

When I lived in Northern Ontario, if you didn't fly in the winter, then you only got to fly about 4 months out of the whole year and even then there were too windy days and rainy days just like here.

Every year we planned and put on at least two full events in the dead of winter. One that I fondly remember was in Hallibury called "The Dog Days of Winter Frozen Finger FunFly held around the middle of February. It was usually around -15 F. We'd scrape the snow off the ice on the lake to make a runway and had a shack with a heater to warm the planes up enough to get the engines started. We always flew in twos to hand the Tranny off when our fingers got too numb to feel the gimbles...LOL!!! I believe the other was in Larder Lake right on the lake itself. We'd get a snowmobiler to pack us a runway in the deep snow. Sure it was cold but we always had a good turnout and a lot of fun!

I remember being out on the Lake in Larder on New Years day just myself and a friend where it was blowing snow and getting in my first flight of the year!

One year about a dozen of us went out to the field on December 31 at around 11:30 PM, got our planes in the air by 11:58 and flew in the New Year in the dark. Now that was quite a feat with no lights on the plane. But it was so bright with the new snow that you could actually see pretty good with out them!

Yep, them was the good ole days of winter flying! I use to just love it!

Nearly over...

It only made it to 12c today, first rain in weeks, windy, not great flying weather...

Flown more this year than in the last 6, burned NO fuel but flattened off a couple of RV batteries just on small stuff.

BTW, I haven't burned off a gallon of fuel in 30+ years; diesels just don't take that much fuel! :P Besides, thermals and slopes are all around, and fuel seems to be redundant...
