Who's got some wren experience?

Hey guys.

So I'm looking for some one who knows s bit about the wren turbines. I've got a wren 44 that's not ramping up. It fires instantly on propane but doesn't ramp up on Kero. I've tested the pump and it runs on 1.5v. But can't test it any lower. It is a new pump.

When I go into "prime" the fuel system you can feel the pump buzz a little but doesn't push the fuel.

I'm stumped guys.

Let me know what you think could help.

Re: Who's got some wren experience?

Hi Jason,
Here is what i think, and why. I have had this happen a few times to me;

Just bc the pump is new doesnt mean its working. New pumps often get stuck until they are broken in. Buzzing just means you have power to it and its trying to work, but in fact, may not be. Take the fuel line feed off of the turbine, and activate the pump. See if your getting fuel. my guess is the impellers inside are stuck. If this is the case, you have to peel back the plastic on the pump and expose the impellers on the one end. take a screw driver and gently push the impellers until free of the bind. Then try it. Should work. You may have to do this a few times until the pump gets worked in with time on it.

Hope this helps
Gary

Re: Who's got some wren experience?

Ya that was my thinking. So I ran the pump on a 7.4v battery in a closed loop with fuel for about 40 mins.

It's like the Ecu just isn't sending enough voltage to the pump to ramp up. But yes just yesterday it fired up fine.

This has me baffled. I may see if I can source another pump and give it a try.

Re: Who's got some wren experience?

DOes it work now as it should? I think you might have loosened the pump up when you applied the 7.4 volts to it. Also did some other searching check your minimum start temp setting on the ecu between 100-108

Re: Who's got some wren experience?

Yes. The pump worked great when I put 7.4 to it. As well as 1.2volts.

I've also got my min start temp at 104. Lol. I've played around with it all day and just can't seem to get it to go.

When I'm going through the start sequence. The PW (pulse width) for the fuel pump starts to Ramp then after 2 seconds it falls to 000. And even in those 2 seconds where the pump says it's working. It doesn't pump.

Re: Who's got some wren experience?

I Agree with Todd. This is common place with new pumps. After running it on 2s lipo it seems to have loosened up. No need to replace it. Another new pump will most likely do the same thing. Todds suggestion regarding start temp is sound as well. You may need to adjust it if hanging

Re: Who's got some wren experience?

I don't have a solution but running 7.4v to the pump to run it in seems a bit excessive, if in fact the pump is even rated for that kind o voltage. I usually run pumps in on one "D" cell which is closer to where the pump would run on the Wren 44. (I run the 44 TP) That said I would try trouble shooting with another pump before looking elsewhere.

Re: Who's got some wren experience?

The pump has a max voltage of 7.4 so I used a half discharged 2 cell Lipo. Then also ran it for a bit on a single cell AA. And works fine that way.

So I'm really feeling that it's possibly something with the Ecu. But I'm going to see if I can Borrow or source a fuel pump for it tomorrow and see what that does.

Was hoping to fly the jet this weekend lol

Re: Who's got some wren experience?

Ahh new info! pw falling to 000 isnt your pump. Its your temp sensor. ecu is shutting off your pump. Probably flashing pw 000 after start failure. Check your connections. Make sure clean and secure. Wiggle during startup. If cant locate that way then temp sensor is gone.
