I wouldn't get too excited about the Horus yet. Amain changed their 'available to order' from July, to Sept, and now it is Dec 2016.

Re: No more Taranis at GH?

Have to agree with John M. as this announcement has been going on for several years with many computer generated images. Was only this past year that they came up with
an actual first copy with lit screen . But "still working on the software". My point would be if the current Taranis software is so good why not use it with upgrades down the road like Spektrum. There is more to it than meets the eye, that we don't really know about. Also they talk about their CNC machined gimbals but according to the pictures I have seen ,looks more like cast metal with maybe some machining and then painted to cover the flaws. All I can say is it better be worth waiting for my cheap HK foamies.

Re: No more Taranis at GH?

I've always wondered why some people have to deride others equipment choices? They all work very well these days, pick yours and let others enjoy theirs.

Taranis and OpenTx firmware are an acquired taste, and I certainly wouldn't recommend it to everyone. I personally like the flexibility and open source nature of the FrSky stuff. I like to tinker, but not everyone is going to cope well with OpenTx. Open source means there is new stuff all the time, and people develop specialized firmware and software for all sorts of special applications.

Re: No more Taranis at GH?

There is plenty of both "informed speculation and criticism" in rcgroups threads dedicated to frsky products that, imho, offers better guidance to a consumer than the comments of someone who is committed to another radio brand (smiley).........
This is the rcgroups thread on the FrSky Horus:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...2574618&page=4

Apart from hardware improvements, especially the gimbals, I gather the big change from FrSky's current Taranis and tray radio, is that Horus will have a "traditional" menu system, which somehow is still going to be compatible with open software evolution. The open software of the Taranis had an initial steep learning curve - almost like being a programmer - which turned off some buyers who, imho, account for the availability, of almost new Taranis tx on the used market, especially in the U.S.

All that said, I agree with the previous posters that almost all current radio systems work fine.... do your own research; lots of information on line and if new to the hobby, consult with the people you anticipate flying with as they can provide hands on, immediate support when stumped by your radio.
For FrSky stuff, that community support is available online, probably more on rcgroups.com - just because of the volume - than here.

good luck

Re: No more Taranis at GH?

There was an interesting post on RCGroups about the FrSky switches and gimbals. He had transferred the guts of a Taranis into a JR 9303 case just for fun and the thumb wheel, but used one Taranis gimbal and one JR, some JR switches and some JR switches:

"I ran an experiment with the thing by putting one of the Jr gimbals and one of the newest Taranis gimbals (plastic coated metal centering arms) in the same transmitter and had people try to guess which one was the JR one. About 50% (same as random guess) picked the right one. The new gimbals are really hard to find a problem with.
I mixed up the switches on the new transmitter to see if people could pick them also, most people can't tell the difference.
The JR version is a little heavier because parts of it are thicker and have a double shell. The JR thumbwheel is nice and feels better than the taranis switches but the taranis switches work as intended.
I've been inside both now and the actual PCB, wiring harnesses and assembly quality is about equal, in some places the Taranis is better (newer and from a country that makes all kind of nice electronic gear now).
Compared to the FIRST taranis the JR had better sticks and switches. Compared to the newest Taranis Plus with new sticks it's all down to the difference between the menu switches vs the thumbwheel. Every where else it's a wash.
Compared to the newest Taranis Plus the belief that the 9303 was way better is IMHO an emotional belief, not a real one based on detailed comparison and blind comparison."

As with many things, people see what they want to until asked to do a blind test.

Actually how it goes is Horus will ship with FrSky's operating system, they developed themselves, but will be capable of being replaced with a new version of OpenTX that is being developed. I can't wait.

Re: No more Taranis at GH?

Jeez the Horus sounds like it's the JR28x all over again.

I'll stick with JETI DS-16/24!

Why do you say that? Couldn't be more polar opposites regarding price.

Re: No more Taranis at GH?

This thread was simply about Great Hobbies making a change to their product lineup. They deleted the old product code and now have added a new code, due to the inclusion of a semi-hard case for the Taranis. So the X9D is back as a product on GH.

It's unfortunate that the thread turned into a VS thread as that was not the intention.

Everyone flies what they can afford, and are comfortable with. The part to remember is that everyone flies....

So the original question/topic is closed.
