We always bring our planes to Sturgeon Lake where my grandparents live, we've flown there the last few Christmas's or New Year's, and yes last year was great cause we didn't even need the skiis cause there was no snow. When we get cold, we just go into the house We also float fly off the dock in the summer, with our canoe ready in case we have an engine quit. I'm looking forward to the break, and more winter flying this year. Good times!

Eat. Sleep. Fly. Life's that simple.

If not, what do we do about MAAC coverage for winter flying, as our MAAC sanctioned sites are more than likely under several feet of snow and ice?

Just a thought...
Contrary to popular belief, MAAC's insurance policy makes no mention of "Sanctioned" sites as a condition of coverage, nor does it make specific reference even to obtaining permission from a land owner to fly.

The "Additional Insured Endorsement" states as those covered under the policy:

"All owners of property used by the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada and/or its members for the purpose of meets, sport flying, contests, exhibitions and related events."

"Various Chartered Clubs belonging to the M.A.A.C. Associated and participating with the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada for the purpose of meets, model flying contests or exhibitions"

and further, among the specific additional insureds is listed:

Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Ontario, as represented by the Minister of Natural Resources.

which, I think, covers the use of crown lands and spaces, such as lakes... so long as there is no specific law or by-law prohibiting the flying of model aircraft in a particular area.

There may be by-laws prohibiting model aircraft at some designated parks, but I very much doubt that any such by-laws or laws are in place for public lakes.

Of course, it is always best to get the permission of the landowner, as there are other liabilities that arise out of trespassing... but in the case of public lands, I believe the policy covers us.

Without this flexability, solitary MAAC members who are no where near a chartered club would be SOL

I intend to visit my wife's cousin, who lives northeast of Peterborough, this winter, and take some planes. He lives right on a lake and is looking forward to trying RC. (Buddy box, of course!)

There are folk who fly up there, off the public beach in the winter. I anticipate contacting the local club to as a courtesy, and find out if there is a chance of channel conflicts, etc.

I just don't want to show up and crap in another cat's sandbox and create hard feelings.

I recall last winter marvelling at the neat marks on the snow after some rather "rambunctious" touch and go sessions; about ten feet of ski trails with prop marks in the snow between them all over the field. (Landing gear was getting a bit "squatty" by the end of the day.)

Hey guys...interesting stuff.

Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Ontario, as represented by the Minister of Natural Resources.
Hmmm...wonder the Queen is in Right of Nova Scotia... Guess it sounds like we are okay. Hope you all have a GREAT time on the ice this sure to check on ice thickness regularly!! Hope we get some ice flying in this year...but so far it seems as though we can still count on the ice yet.

Hi Dave Holmes,

We fly at least 75km NNE of the closest 'Lakefield'(Peterborough Club?) Field. We try for the the best of mid Feb. weather, that we can all 'get sick of work' together and go flying. Usuallly mid week to avoid the snowmobiles...

Glad we aren't the only ones that like the 'snow print game'....

Skiis and floats that can straddle a bootprint....Rule ! ! !

Maac Safety Rules abound.

Her Majesty the Queen ? ? ? She tends bar at the local tavern. We wear our 'beer goggles' after flying....We try to 'Minister our Natural Resourses'....HeHeHe

Take care,
Have fun,
Unabashed Combat Team
