Seven successful tows. Not an ideal day with a 20+ km crosswind and the lift was very broken up. We had a hoot anyway!

Re: More Glider Towing

Interesting photos, Mervin.
a few questions-

Do you have trouble keeping enough line tension to keep the
ring from dropping away from that cup hook?

How does the tow pilot land without being clawed out of the air
by the tow line catching a barb wire fence?

Do the different colored wings of the glider help visibility?

I haven't soared a pure glider for 10 years, gave my hi-start away

Yes. It takes a steady hand on the throttle and elevator, as soon as the line slackens the bit of ribbon 3" ahead of the glider pulls the key ring off the cup hook. So you both land and try again. Out of our 7 launches Saturday we had one of those events. It is a nice safety feature because it prevents the two birds from getting slammed hard when a lot of slack develops from the two pilots loosing co-ordination in turns.

It happens! The tow line is 10 pound test dollar store kite string, most glider tow guys go with a minimum 75 pound test tow line, then build in a weak link in case both the glider and tug releases fail. Our whole line is a weak link and can and does break when things like that occur.
Once our buddy from Leduc was down towing for us with his Kadet Senior with an OS FP .40 in it, this plane was light - about 4.5 pounds and he was coming in low over the fence just above stall at about a fast walk when the line snagged. The plane stopped so fast it almost looked like it shot backwards and dropped the last 3 feet out of the sky. It stalled the engine and splayed the music wire gear, no other damage. We still laugh every time it's brought up.
Any plane heaver or moving a bit faster will just snap the line.

Do they ever! You need to use colors with extreme contrast though.

Me too! Missed the silly thing so bought a new one this summer, forgot how aggravating it is to have to keep re-laying the line every second launch due to wing change!
Oh well! Need the exercise desperately!

Re: More Glider Towing

Here are a couple photos of the set up Dennis & I are using to learn on . Old Citabria with .80 Saito , modified Goldburg Electra , We installed a commercial release in the tow plane & I built a release in the nose of the glider . A simple set up using a couple nylon landing gear brackets with servo pulled golden rod . We take off from the ground with both the tow plane & glider . It was very windy here on Sunday & we waited ready for it die down but it did not . Oh well the thermals will be better next time anyway .

Meanwhile I will work on Golden Eagle & have it flying before the end of this season .

Robert .

Re: More Glider Towing

Looks simple enough Robert. Here is a short video of one of our tows on Saturday. It was pretty windy here too, Ron couldn't keep his hat on! https://youtu.be/ihvaKSXQAj0
