Presentation & Positioning Scores dropped for 2005 Conte

Just received an email from IMAC Headquarters with some interesting news.

Here is the email:

For Immediate Release to all IMAC Members:

Waiver of Presentation Scoring - 1/5/05

During the 2004 season, the IMAC Board of Directors requested input from the
IMAC membership regarding the application and use of Presentation/Positioning
judging and scoring. After reviewing, and debating the input received, the IMAC
Board unanimously passed the resolution listed below.

With the passage of this resolution, IMAC Policy waives Positioning/Presentation
judging and scoring from any IMAC contest for the 2005 contest season.
Accordingly then, the IMAC Board of Directors requests that all CD's holding
IMAC contests follow this new policy and not use Presentation/Positioning
judging and scoring at their contests.

Further, the IMAC Board of Directors will submit rule changes during the current
AMA rules change cycle to eliminate the Presentation/Positioning score from the
AMA Scale Aerobatic rules for the 2007 season.

The full text of the resolution is as follows:

Motion by Fred Johnson, IMAC Vice President
Seconded by Wally Pitts, IMAC President

Whereas, the IMAC Board of Directors is fully committed to the education and
training of IMAC judges through IMAC Judging Schools, and Seminars

And Whereas the IMAC Board of Directors fully endorses the absolute need for
standardized judging criteria in precision aerobatics

And Whereas the Presentation/Positioning Score introduces an unacceptable level
of subjective and impressionistic judging into the IMAC Rules.

And Whereas the Presentation/Positioning score lacks the objective and
definitive criteria necessary for judging precision aerobatic maneuvers.

Therefore Be it Resolved that the IMAC Board of Directors advise and request
that all Contest Directors who have AMA sanctioned IMAC contests scheduled for
the 2005 season, eliminate (waive) the presentation/positioning judging and
score from their contests.

Be it Further Resolved that the IMAC Board of Directors remove the
Presentation/Positioning rules by the use of an AMA Rules Change Proposal for
the 2007 AMA Rules cycle.

Well one less thing to worry about but I wonder how hard it will be for the judges to just "turn off" taking into account something they have been doing for years.

You will never remove bias from a judge for one form of presentation for another, trying to do so is an unattainable goal.

Two manuvers both flown technically correct will receive different scores just based on how they are presented to the judges, I dont think any judge can turn that off.

At the Worlds in pattern the top places are decided by presentation, CPLR does not fly more technically correct than Quique or Chip, but his flights are like music while everyone elses are not

"Zoneless box survives"

Although the Presentation / Positioning Score has been dropped (a step in the right direction,) we still have the Zoneless box. At present, I am neither overly for or against the Zoneless box but it would be more of a challenge to have a precise center line to shoot for rather than just "somewhere out there."

If I'm not mistaken, the zoneless box and the presentation score were both brought into the rule structure at the same time. They are were both brought into the rule structure, to try to reduce our overall footprint, and reward a pilot for doing so. Whether that process achieved the objective or not, is a matter for another discussion.

My personal feeling is that they should have both been allowed to stay, or get rid of both of them. That is not how the IMAC BOD chose to act though. Rightly or wrongly, the zoneless box is still part of the IMAC rules, which we here in Canada have chosen to follow.
