FAA Registration, Finally!

Well, Better late than never, I guess. Now that we're on the cusp of September I finally received this today from the FAA:

Quote:
Thank you for your inquiry and apologies for the delayed response. Our registration website has undergone updates and is now able to accept foreign addresses.

Regards,

FAA UAS Integration Office
UAShelp@faa.gov
www.faa.gov/uas

This was in response to those original inquiries made the very beginning of the year and the subject of so much discussion. At least it would release a US citizen from the liability of registering a foreigner under their own banner, formerly the only way to make it work I heard of till now.

So close to the election. Hmmm, wonder which will want to take the credit...............

Re: FAA Registration, Finally!

Thanks for the heads up! Just in time since I'm heading to the States this weekend for an IMAC contest!

Re: FAA Registration, Finally!

There is no credit to take yet - Typical government BS: here is what you get if you try to get into the registration page: "The Amazon CloudFront distribution is configured to block access from your country. "

Re: FAA Registration, Finally!

You can access their site from any US wifi hotspot on the way down. Or, as I did, you can use a US based VPN / proxy service. All the FAA thing meant was that they now allow you to put a Canadian address in. Clearly the payment system is still blocking.

[EDIT] And, yes, as long as the payment system 'sees' you as being in the US you can still use your Canadian credit card.

Anyway... for what it's worth, I went to all the trouble to register before going down to Flite Fest in Ohio only to NEVER be asked for it. However, I'm sure everyone's mileage will vary and better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!

Good luck,
J

Thanks Jason, I'll wait until I've crossed the border and then sign in on my phone.

Re: FAA Registration, Finally!

No problem. Once you register for an account you have to validate your email. Once you've done that you can register for a #. Once you do that your profile page will show something like the below image on the right side. You can use the links to email/print a PDF of a little card with the number. You do NOT need the card, you just have to have the number. (You're actually supposed to put the # inside all your models).

Good luck and have fun!

Re: FAA Registration, Finally!

so if you want to compete in the states, we need to have our airplanes registered. YES?
one number for all aircraft after you register.
seems simple enough....

Re: FAA Registration, Finally!

Yep, one number for all your aircraft.

Keep in mind that this is an FAA requirement. It is NOT an AMA requirement and because of that, the AMA will NOT be checking to see if you are registered with the FAA. They do NOT wish to be the FAA's "police" on this.

However, one should register because if the real police catches one flying without an FAA registration number, the civil and criminal penalties are quite high.

Just don't expect any event organizers to check for FAA registration. The onus is on YOU to comply.

Re: FAA Registration, Finally!

I flew at several US contests this year and no one checked, but it it's assumed that you have done the registration. I also judged at the US Nats at the AMA field in Muncie in July and no one was checking the US pilots.

But simple enough to do and best to do it just to avoid any potential issues. Number should be displayed on the planes if you take them to the US. I just used clear Avery printer labels and printed them up at home. Really no specs as to size etc. Just to be clearly visible.
