Himax motor shuttering on spool-up!
Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
Situation: New shock flyer with a Himax 2015-4100 in GWS Gearbox, 3S 830 Apogees, 11x4.7. Not flown yet...here's why!!
On initial throttle up, the motor is pulsating back and forth about 3-4 times per second or so in a rather violent jarring motion. I immediately throttle off and retry, same jarring! So I grab the plane by the stick mount, and throttle up is okay with only a short jarring motion at the very beginning. Once the prop is turning at slow throttle, I can let it go and it will turn no problems, smooth as a baby's bum!
Motor was fine before, the whole system is out of my Formosa which ran great!
I first thought that the gears were not meshing properly, but everything looks okay. Could it be frequency/interference problems? Or is this a mechanical problem with gears meshing improperly? Prop too big? Maybe Fast Start vice Soft Start Option on ESC will help?
HELP PLEASE! I will diagnose tonight, I just need some direction and things to try....
Thaks alot everybody!

I had a similiar problem with my Nippy outrunner. The problem was the speed controller. It was very inconsistent, worked good for a while and then buggered up. My controller was a Castle Creation. They sent me a new one within 1 week. Excellent service!

The symptoms are that of the soft start not being selected. The setting is probably "Hard". In my own collection of motors, there is only one rotating armature style brushless, a HiMax 2015-5400 with GWS 6.6 to 1 gearing. If I forget to reset the start from "hard" which is what my outrunners prefer to "soft" I get that symptom if I'm lucky or stripped gear teeth if I'm not.
Salutations from the Pacific North WET!
S.P.A.D.s, Fibreglas & Balsa EDF's, Foamies, Brushless powered and nitro balsa planes, they're all in my hanger, just don't explain what it all means to the mrs, eh?
