I know about ideal hobbies, i haven't priced it there but i am pretty sure it is more expensive through him than the kite guys. anything deemed R/C usually is.

Hi all,

I've found that art supply stores stock the foamboard in several thicknesses, and several sheet sizes. I haven't checked lately, since I was gifted with 3 free sheets of 3' x 4' foamcore, but I seem to recall it wasn't too expensive - about $8 for a 3x4 of 3mm. I'll try to look into the local shop and get back to y'all.

Oh, yeah, cheaper!!!

Some of you guys really don't understand retailing, do you? Buy your c/f tube from the kite shop, then ask him for music wire and control horns, and I bet he can't help you. Meantime, the LHS is gone, 'cuz his prices were "too high"...

Keep it up, soon the ONLY place youi will get model supplies will be mail order. Good thinking... :P

Believe I've seen that foamboard at Zellers, also. Not sure on the sizes though.

Foam board

I purchased 20" x 30" sheets of Sturdy Board from the "Michaels" art supply store for $4 a sheet. The stuff is:

With paper on: 5 mm thick, super stiff, sheet weighs 255 grams.
With paper off: 4 mm thick, Very depron -like foam, 75 grams.

The weight difference is huge with the paper removed. Simply soak in warm water for 10 minutes, then start rubbing. Comes off pretty easy.

I needed a new airframe, 1st experiment was getting pretty beatup. I started with a fresh sheet about 3 hours ago. combined with removing the paper this is as far as I got tonight. So far it weighs in at 45 grams. The span in 32". There was a fairly lengthy interuption in there for kids' bedtime routines. It doesn't take long to put these planes together.

Yes carbon fiber is a requirement.

OK, just back from the local art supply store.

32"x40" sheets:
1/8", 3/16" white - $6.95; 3/16" black - $7.95; 1/2" white - $12.95.

40"x60" sheets, 3/16" white - $11.95.

48" x 96" sheets, 3/16" white - $19.95.

They also had the large sheets in black, but I didn't get the prices - I'd expect they're a couple of dollars more than the white.

So for the 32x40 sheets, that's 78 cents per square foot, for the 40x60, 71 cents, and for the 48x96, 62 cents per sq foot.
