Tail Blade Grip PROBLEM!!

hey guys,

so replacing my Align 500L tail bearings today because the grips had developed slop and the bearings were gritty so was time for a bearing overhaul!!

So got the new bearing installed in the grips and with new thrust bearing as well and now when I tighten the grip up on the hub it is really tight and stiff.

And more than I would almost feel comfortable letting it go for a couple flights to see if it settled because it really is rather stiff, if I back the screw off at least 1/3 a turn then I have zero play and is butter smooth when rotating the grip on the hub...but obviously the screw can't be left 1/3 a turn from being tightened...even with loctite!!

Tried replacing the washer for the screw with a fresh new flat one with no difference.

Tried swapping each sides stuff like grips, screws, all that jazz...same results on each end of the hub.

Thought, ok maybe these AVID bearings are thicker by a hair, nope, both Aligns I removed and the new AVID's are 2.97mm exactomongo on the calipers.

The only place there is suppose to be a shim is one between the outside radial bearing and the thrust bearing....I tried adding another with no difference and tried removing it and ended up being able to tighten it without any binding and it moves butter smooth...BUT...now I have slop back and I can pull and push the grip away and towards the hub (so axial slop).

What I did also notice is that the "axial play" I got when I removed the shim was slightly less of a gap than the thickness of the shim as in I could NOT fully insert the shim into the gap I was now getting between the hub and grip.

So now I'm thinking maybe sand down the shim a tad hair bit so that everything sits perfect when tightened???

One of my concerns is that before with the worn bearing it was causing me axial play in the grips on the hub at before mentioned(one was I'd say close to 2mm of play and the other grip about 1mm) and now if I were to sand down the shims because everything's to tight now would I have even more slop down the road cuz these shims will be a hair less thick.....??

Leaping ahead a little bit here with this question but when the grips developed slop like they did, could I have added shims where the one already is?...or would you then put them between the hub and grip??...what do others do?...I've heard so many mixed judgement on shimming tail grips that have slop....and isn't that one shim I have in there suppose to be "pre-loading" the thrust bearing???(which in all honesty am not sure what that "pre-loading" thing means anyways or how that works lolol)

I HATE having to MAKE things work for these RC's instead of them just working as they're suppose to be built as!!!...and really don't want to sand these shims down unless a bunch of you guys come back and say "ohh ya thats common, do it all the time lololol"

Cuz to be honest I seen more of people having to shim and modify hub's(seen another suggestion to lightly sand down where the bolt goes in the stem of the hub where the grip goes on to make it shorter) when doing google searches and HK and clone helis more than ANYTHING and sorry but this AIN't one of those!!! lolol

Re: Tail Blade Grip PROBLEM!!

Not sure if this helps but I recall quite a few years back when the Align 500ESP was the hot 500 size a lot of guys, myself included, would file down the ends of the tail rotor hub (where the bolts thread into) The ESP had the slop in the tail like you do now and doing this got rid of it. I just filed a small amount at a time until I got the "feel" I was looking for......

That's a good option. Either that or a shim. Either way, you need to have the bolt head bottom out in the thread before it touches the inner bearing race.

Curious to hear how you solve this one.

Re: Tail Blade Grip PROBLEM!!

If I were to sand the hub down where the bolt goes through, I wouldn't be able to use any shim between the outside radial bearing and thrust bearing.

Can't add a shim either since it's already too tight with the shim like mentioned.

I think I'll sand down the shim a tad bit and see how that goes.

Re: Tail Blade Grip PROBLEM!!

sry about never chimming back in here. I never did get any photos, but I did end up using some 0.25mm shims and replacing the 0.3mm shims that were in there.

I then also had to shim the main grips since I was being ---- !!! lolol

I added a 0.1mm shim to each main grip. I realize 0.2mm doesn't sound like a lot to fuss at but it really is and sure looks like alot more than that when you see it and feel it in your hands
