Since the question was put out there and I see so many pilots driving Grand Caravans including myself what would you trust to hang behind one? How big of trailer? I have the 3.3 V6 in mine.

Basically just noting that I don't have any trailer sticking above the cap on the truck so I think that makes a difference with wind resistance especially out on the highway. Taller trailers will catch more wind.

Really a 5 x 10 with plane stuff is not a heavy tow load. I think you can get a wide variety of answers here so more than likely you really need to decide what else you want from the vehicle. Sure, I would not try and tow it with a Smart Car, but a mid size SUV or truck will tow it fairly easily. I would check the towing capacity for the vehicle you are considering and you likely need something that can pull 3000-3500 lbs to give you a safety margin. I think my Ram will tow 7500 but that is twice what you need.

The van is getting retired. Most of the new vans have a center pedestal and I can't fit the 42 % Dalton in it. When gas was at a $1.30 a liter it was rough at 75 KM a day to work one way. I think one day it will be up there again. I was looking at the RAM 1500 echo diesel. A little overkill since the trailer is around 1000lbs empty.. Some friends that own them are very happy. Would also make a great commuter for me. That being said I see some gas vehicles out there with some good numbers also. It would be nice to have a daily commuter and a vehicle that you can drive a few hours to a contests and not be sore when you get there.

Grand Caravan's are great, we had one. I would be comfortable with a 6x12 with RC stuff, but with brakes & a trans cooler.

I always recommend no more than 75% of max tow rating on vehicle since those are based on ideal condition & flat ground. People who max out their tow ratings sometimes get into trouble with adverse road & weather conditions.

Re: Vehicle to Tow a trailer

Be careful with the new Fiat diesel Dodge is using. Heard horror stories. Do your research.

Re: Vehicle to Tow a trailer

For your money it's hard to beat the Dodge Caravan with the optional factory tow package. The breaks are really good on the latest generation vehicles.
Also the stow and go seats are an absolute must for modellers.

Re: Vehicle to Tow a trailer

I love my Tacoma, the only issue ia that they are not great on fuel when towing even a small trailer. Toyota finally addressed this issue by replacing the 4 liter V6 with a 3.5, if your thinking of new I would definitely recommend test driving one. The great thing about the tacoma is they hold their value better than anything else.
