For what it's worth, I just got a 2016 Silverado Z71 with the 5.3L V8. I believe it's rated for around 9000lbs towing. But, what has me seriously impressed is the fuel economy. Drove it from the Waterloo area to Mississauga a couple weeks ago and the average fuel economy on the way out was 8.9L/100kms! That's not exactly normal, the 401 was slow moving, but none the less awesome for an extended cab 4x4 v8 pickup. I average about 10L/100kms on my 25km commute to work, which is about half 80km/h highway and half city.

Those are some good numbers.
Ya, I have been very pleased with it. Of course if you are in a rush it isn't hard to turn that 10 to a 12. I think the actual highway rating is 10.7l/100 but the new test cycle implemented a few years back is a lot harder, I think they increased the speed they were using for highway as well. I haven't towed anything yet but I would expect any half ton pick up to make easy work of a small utility trailer full of planes.

That said...imho a minivan is still more practical. We went with the truck mostly because my winter commute can really suck and partly because it is what we liked. Did a ton of research and you don't save much money or fuel with the smaller trucks but you do give up a lot of space....otherwise I would have got a Tacoma.

Re: Vehicle to Tow a trailer

As mentioned , do your research on reliability. Some mileage estimates here are a little ambitious . Small diesels work but be aware that service is a little over the hill when it comes to oil changes and parts. What you may save on gas may be overtaken in higher oil change costs and the higher cost of servicing them. It's like yah ,I save 60 bucks on gas but it costs me 80 more for oil changes.... Just relative numbers but the jist is there.

For something thus light I would stick with gas.
