Re: you don't see this everyday

In my 28 years in the metal fabrication business I've never seen a drill bit do that.

Re: you don't see this everyday

Ah-yes!
A few years ago the shop I was working in hired a brand new immigrant from the Czech Republic, very little English so the boss took him downtown so he could buy a few basic tools for work. This particular boss was the sort that pinched his nickels till the beaver defecated so he came back with all the "bargains". The next day the poor fellow came over to me shaking his head in disbelief with a drill bit exactly like yours!

That is the second one I have ever seen! Keep it and frame it!

Re: you don't see this everyday

hey Merv... ya that kinda makes sense.. I did this at work.. broke a couple of bits way to easy.. one was even wiggling around like a wet noodle.. I ask the parts guy what kind of drill bits are these.. then it broke , then I got this one..

So ya this is kinda making sense.. the high quality asian recyled steel..

Re: you don't see this everyday

For a while work was so tight they were buying stuff at Harbour Freight in the states. One swipe with a hack saw and the teeth were gone. Band saw blades cut nice curves through stock steel and drills suffered the same failures as yours. Suspect people were applying too much pressure to try and get what was left of the tip to cut in.

A few retailers over here offer items from the same dubious Pac Rim sourcing.

Re: you don't see this everyday

My guess is poor quality control steel and/or processing at the manufacturing facitlity is the root of the problem. That bit could have fallen on the floor and missed the hardening process. Some flunky in the plant swept the floor and put the unhardened bits in a bin with the ones that just came out of heat-treating. Then packaging and off to you!!!

Re: you don't see this everyday

Max, the one my co-worker had was no accident, the whole set was like that! We are in an age where things are not always "as advertised"!
