I figured out why the engine is not starting. Basically, I'm not spinning the engine fast enough to get spark. With the plug removed, I check for spark and there's lots. I bought a second plug and with one plug installed in the cylinder head I checked for spark on the second plug using my drill to spin the engine and it turns out it's not spinning fast enough for spark.

I have a Sullivan Hi-Tork starter and a 12V 7.2AH battery and the engine stalls the starter. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can spin the engine fast enough to get spark?

Either get a bigger battery (10amp) or add another 6 volt gel cell to bring the volts to 18. Those sullivan starters (at least mine) can handle the extra voltage for short burts.

do not run 18/24volts through your power panel!!!!! I just ruined mine that way the other week. The sullivan starter handled it just fine though...

I have a 31cc Ryobi in a 4*120......I use a Kavan starter (planetery gear reduction)...I was using a 12.5 AH battery and as long as it was fully charged, it started it fine.
What I use now is a 700A Eliminator portable pack from CTC. Once charged this lasts for weeks on the Kavan and has no trouble at all starting the Ryobi.. I never tried my Sullivan Hi-Tork but I have tried the Sullivan Dynatron and it works on the Ryobi with the Eliminator for power.
