What would be a good kit to build for my first time. Something to cut my teeth on sort of speak, preferably not to expensive. I was kind of looking for a sport model.

Its a cash and carry world people. You pay as you go.Sometimes you pay alittle sometimes you pay alot and sometimes you pay with all you got.

Try a SIG kit. If you are a rank beginner and need a trainer, get the LT-40. If you are ready for a low-wing aileron plane, try a 4*40 or 4*60. All three of these are pretty straight forward to build. Good luck, Dzl

You didn't say whether you are just starting out or already have a trainer and some flying experience or are an experienced flyer!

Sig kits are indeed one of the best type of builders kits today! A few have already been mentioned but if you are wanting to build a trainer type plane I would also recommend the Sig PT 40 and build it with the ailerons! This is a great kit for learning basic building techiniques! Its a stick building type plane. You even have to cut the pieces and assemble the bulkheads yourself. When its finished it makes a wonderful trainer airplane.

If you want to build something less docile in a trainer I would also highly recommend the Hobby Lobby Telemaster 40. I have built three of these kits over the years and it was one of the best planes I have ever flown. With a bit of modification it can be an excellent second plane to learn basic aerobatics as well.

My mods included cutting an inch and a half off the entire bottom of the fuse to make it more slim looking. I also built the wing using only minimal diehedral and clipped the wings by one rib bay on each side. This plane was able to fly extremely slow ( also built the flaps ) or at full throttle with a good .46 engine, it would really move and perform aerobatics very well! A good all around fun airplane!

Just a couple more suggestions for what its worth!
