To Everyone with an Interest in Scale and Scale Competition

Chuck Smith the Chairman of the Scale Committee has announced that the recommendations that were approved by the Scale Committee last year will be in place for this years NATS. This is extremely good news as a few new classes will be introduced and all levels of competition will now fly 5 mandatory maneuvers as well as 6 optional. This equates to more flying for all which is one of the concerns voiced over the years I have been involved with building and flying scale aircraft.
The Greater Sudbury Modelers have been working towards a competitive scale event that will be held this year on July 2 and July 3. I have been privileged as a Scale Committee Member to assist them in any way I can. You can view the flyer at:
The Greater Sudbury Modelers home page: http://www.greatersudburymodelers.com/
N.O.O.S.E as it is called stands for Northern Ontario Open Scale Event
Last year a proposal for rules for a new classes of competition were submitted to the Scale Committee as well as increasing all classes to 6 optional maneuvers. Unfortunately this recommendation did not make it to the AGM and we had to wait until we were sure the rules we would be using would mirror those at the NATS.
Originally the rules were submitted as Open Scale apparently they are to be called Fun Scale at the Nats. Due to time constraints it was decided to only run one of the disciplines at the NOOSE event and that is Open or Fun Scale. The rules can be viewed at: http://home.cogeco.ca/~denpratt/Scale%20Rules.html
The idea behind this event was to open a new Scale Competition in Northern Ontario and to encourage and familiarize possible new and old competitors with one of the new disciplines to be used at our NATS. As Chuck Smith has said: “Scale contests in Canada have declined, we need to reenergize this.” Gentlemen this is what we are attempting to do get people interested in this new discipline and let them try it out. Hopefully some of those who will participate at NOOSE will take up the challenge and head south to the NATS.
We extent an invitation to all members of MAAC, the board, executive and especially the Scale Committee and its Chairman Chuck Smith to attend if possible and to vigorously support this new event.
Below is the letter from The Greater Sudbury Modelers inviting all to attend?
Date: Saturday July 2nd & Sunday July 3rd
Greater Sudbury Modelers (GSM) would like to invite all pilots and spectators in both Canada and the US, for the first Annual N.O.O.S.E (Northern Ontario Open Scale Event). This will take place on Saturday July 2nd and Sunday July 3rd and is to be our first venture into the world of Scale Competition for RC aircraft. It looks to be one of the premiere events in Northern Ontario. This will be an officially sanctioned MAAC event. There will be trophies for First, Second and Third place as well as Best Civilian and Best Military. Also in static there will be trophies for Pilots Choice and Peoples Choice. There will be substantial draw prizes throughout the two days of the competition. As it develops a prize list and a map to the event will be added to the web pages. These two web pages will carry the current information as it becomes available.

Pilots will compete in a new Scale Classification called Open Scale. This classification will be used at this year's Canadian Nationals as an introduction to Scale competition for all pilots flying any scale aircraft. This class is open to all scale planes, whether they're ARF's, ARC's, Kits or scratch built. There will be a $5 dollar registration fee for pilots entering the 2 day competition. If you have ever thought about trying the world of scale competition this classification makes it easy and fun for all levels of pilots and builders to compete and best of all to have fun, fly and learn together. If you are intending to attend the Canadian Nationals as a competitor this would be the perfect tune up to hone your skills prior to the upcoming Canadian Nationals in August this year. The following link defines the rules and scoring as well as the eligibility of the aircraft.

N.O.O.S.E will provide a halftime show on both days that will include some of Northern Ontario's best pilots. Various Acrobatic acts, a possible glider or 2, jets, Air-to-Air Combat flying and you might even see a John Deere taxiing down the grass field. Last year at our Grand Opening, we put on a show that is personally, the best I've ever seen in my short RC career.
Greater Sudbury Modelers is located on Dominion Drive in Hanmer, Ontario. 15 minutes North of Sudbury. We boast the newest facility in the Region and at 80' x 800', our runway is also one of the largest grass strips in the area. The property is void of any major obstacles (ie: obstructing trees & power lines) and parking is not a problem.
Do you have an RV? A tent? or just a sleeping bag? That's ok. We do have primitive camping grounds available, with running water to wash up (not yet tested and not certified drinkable by the Greater City of Sudbury). We also have proper "facilities" on-site should you need to use them. GSM and all its members would like to extend our welcome to those who will travel from out of town, and if you wish to arrive early in the week, you are more than welcome to do so as well.
Proof of current MAAC or AMA membership will be required for any flying at the field or entry in the two days of Scale Competition.
