I have always liked scale aircrafts, specially big stuff. I saw this herky bird offering from GWS at Hobby Hobby couple days ago and really liked it. According to specs of the box this aircraft can be built with 2 ducted fan engines or 2 twin props or 4 multi engines as real bird, I have never been into electrics but this aircraft and few others that one of the club member has are very facinating and interesting. Could i start of with this aircraft or should i look into something else before getting into 4 multi engines.

Another feature that really impressed me were scale landing gears on this bird, personally i dont like belly landers!....

What do i need to know about motors, battries and speed controllers for electrics...

Multi Engine electric

Multi motors on an electric are not difficult to build or fly, they don't have the RP< matching problems or fear of engine failure issues that you get with Nitro multi's The GWS motors provide acceptable power, but if you get bitten by the electric bug as a lot of us have then an upgrade to brushless power will be in your future. As a first electric multi or single is not an issue, what do you like look at flying is more important.

For a stock GWS Herky Bird a 20 amp ESC would cover your needs, any of the brands out there give good service, I have Electri Fly, GWS, Hitec, Plantraco and some others no longer in production that all work well. The plane comes with motors so no problem there.

Batteries, You'll want something in the 1200 to 1500 MAH range regardles of chemistry for the Herky Bird. For chemistry there's the old reliable NiCd, heavy but very abuse tolerant. NiMh more energy per gram than NiCd but a little less tolerant of abuse like over charging or too high a charge rate, then there Lithium Polymer which reguire good care and attention to be used safely and provide good service life. They are commonly called LiPo's follow the manufacturers recommendations and they will provide the most energy per gram of any battery type. They are the first choice for me till something better comes along, and it will, I just don't know what it is yet.
Buy the charger that suits your battery type, some will do it all. I like ones like the Hobbico field charger mark II that do it all and two packs at a time, but that's just me. The advice you get from others will reflect their experiences you will have to sift through our suggestions and make the decisions that apply to your situation. It's fun and relatively straight forward to fly electric.

Salutations from the Pacific North WET!

S.P.A.D.s, Fibreglas & Balsa EDF's, Foamies, Brushless powered and nitro balsa planes, they're all in my hanger, just don't explain what it all means to the mrs, eh?
