We are looking at different ways to get other involved and interested in model flying. we are looking for activities do as a group for Big Brothers. we were going to get them together to build a rubber powered plane but the kits are either too complicated or so simple. We are looking for something that might require a bit of glueing etc. and could be completed in a few hours. Any ideas would be great. thanks
Coming home with the same number of pieces as you left with = good nights sleep......in bed not on the couch.

Donít get me wrong I am not trying to dissuade you from doing something to get young people involved. Starting the interest is easy maintaining that interest is much harder. You are picking a group to work with so other than being able to build rubber band models of relative inexpensive material what can these kids afford? Even Scouts fall into the same problem there are a few who could afford to progress in the hobby but most could never even think about affording anything but rubber band simple models. One other thing to consider is the fact these kids will need an adult or parent to become and stay involved or you may have them flying at parks and school yards.

One program that I saw was successful was a small group of a half dozen was chosen and an actual kit trainer was purchased. A radio, engine, covering etc were either purchased or donated. The kids met once a week and under the tutelage of an experienced builder or builders the plane was constructed by the group. When it was finished they had only to pay their AMA coverage. Membership in the club was a trade off for work done by the group around the field such as cleaning up, painting helping with work parties. They all flew that plane with the help of a buddy box and when it was damaged they all showed up to repair it. Though these kids could not fanaticaly afford to partake of this hobby they invested their time and earned the right to fly. Nothing in this world is free and from the years I spent with youngsters if you just give them something without any investment from them they may discard it just as easily as they received it. However if they have to work for something they tend to regard it as having value.
