Ran a Wattage Thermalaire 60 inch span electric glider today.
Power was the Graupner Speed 400, 6 x 3 prop and a 7 cell NiMH.
The power was marginal due to the high wing loading. Would an 8 cell
pack give better performance or going to a gearbox and 12X8 be
the better solution?

On the speed 400s there is quite a noticeable difference between an 8 cell and 7 cell pack. I would try an 8 cell. Just be sure you have decent cooling air flow over the motor. The speed 400 gets HOT.

On the other hand, a bigger prop is always better.

I haven't used Speed 400 motors in ages but I recall they didn't last long with currents much above about 12A.

So... Measure the current and shoot for about 14A static. Don't run it too long.
