First 4S OS FS70s Please Help

Hello I wanted to install a smoke system and it was suggested that I buy a 4 stroke engine. After some research decided that to achieve a quality smoke system this was probably the way to go. Not wanting to spend a lot of money to start this endeavor I researched used and prices and got what I believe to be a low mileage but well used engine off of eBay. Being this is my first 4 stroke I am looking for tips. The engine is an OS FS 70 Surpass. On first inspection the compression feels great but I noticed on a full cycle I heard 3 small clicks in the engine. I am assuming this is the opening and closing of the valves but do not know if this is normal to hear. I do not want to test run the engine if this is a sign that something may be wrong. If someone could advise me to my first 4 stroke I would be much obliged in this area, or any others. Also from what I have read I am not sure if the standard 15% Morgan Cool Power fuel I use is right. If there is any tips on the smoke system that to would be appreciated. Thanks all and hope you are all having a great season thus far.

OS 70

If I were you, i'd read the manual thorougly and try and figure out how to set the valves. I'd set the valves and then see if you still here the ticking noise. Could also be a sticky valve?

Strange one should ask about an OS Surpass 70. Just a few days ago I completely rebuilt one of these.

The clicking probably comes from the valve train. Possibly too much tappet clearance, sticky lifters etc. The clicking could also be slack between the rod and the crankpin at BDC. The tappet clearance is set between .100 and .040mm (0.004"/0.015") the appropriate shims will be needed for this.

Take the valve covers off and inspect the tappets. Take the rear cover off the case and see if there is any rust or sludge inside.

If you intend to do any work on this engine you will need metric allen keys and a selection of small metric wrenches.

Once you have inspected the insides we can offer definitive help.

Forums are great with lots of suggestions and ideas when one is truly out of options. One thing newbies should consider is that the local club usually has very experienced members in most facets of this hobby. I know from experience trying to diagnose something over the phone or the internet is difficult at best. As most would agree its better if one has hands on access to the equipment that is giving the problem. Also most of your local go to guys enjoy the challenge of showing and helping out someone new to the hobby. Before you take the engine apart or start it take it to your local club and ask who is the best 4 stroke engine tuner then ask him if he will look over your engine and ask him what he recommends. If you have an engine stand all the better bring it too and he just may take the time to show you the care and feeding of that little booger.
