... to my friend John for a great piece for flying yesterday!!
We were out at the flying field, not having one of our more successful days flying, but none the less trying to enjoy ourselves. John had his B-25 out with him and it was flying and handling well; to the point where he was able to attempt some stalls and rolls with it. I was busy prepping my Patriot when I noticed that John had come out awkwardly and very low from a roll, very unlike previous ones.
When I called over to see if everything was okay, he yelled back that he had control problems!! Of course, being a twin, the first suspect was an engine failure. As John slowly came round in the circuit, it was apparent that both engines were still running, but that he was having difficulty getting turned over the field, and that he needed to make an emergency landing!! I let him know that he was all clear on the field and could land wherever he could get it!! To that end he nailed the landing, one light bounce and managed to keep everything in one piece, and both engines running!!
Turns out that he had lost one of the internal bellcranks to his ailerons!!
It was a great piece of flying and some quick thinking that saved him! Let's just hope he doesn't need to do that again anytime soon!!
Safety Precautions: Do not touch the rolling airscrew in order not to be hurt!
I'd like to offer you moral support, but I have questionable morals!
