Here is another option, you can use MDF it is VERY rigid, and when supported right, it will not warp!

Still in favor of the hollow core doors myself.. I have had a couple benches made from them.. They r light, stay straight, and best of all, you can get pins into it... oh yea... they also tend to be fairly cheap
happy flying

I use an old door with 2 X 6 legs.
The 2 X 6 's require less wood than 2 x 4 's

I bought one of these. They go on sale half price all the time for 69.95 at CDN Tire.
I could not make one for that.

Cheap or Free Govt Surplus stuff!

I picked up heavy duty 4 x 8 table from the trash bin at my Fed Gov work area in Ottawa. This old wood table was in mint shape and makes a great work bench for my shop. The legs came off with nuts and bolts and it slid in the truck of my malibu just barly. Most cities will have locations for used Gov't furniture etc. Ours is located in an Industrial park part of the city.

PS: I've never been to proud to bin dive!

Me neither, Brother! It's aMAZING the neat stuff that people (like my wife!) decide is junk and should be tossed. (You should see my garage!)
