Hi guys, I was at a club meeting the other night, and was listening to a member tell us how he stuffs a muffler with something to quiet it down, but I never had the chance to ask him what he was using to stuff the muffler, have you ever heard of this,?? I am just wondering because my super tiger .75 is so loud with a pitts muffler, I was wondering if I could do anything to improve it? anyways if you have any ideas on this, it would be great to hear from you,,,thanks,,,Joey,,,

I have heard of stuffing a muffler with steel wool.
Never tried it though.

My floatplane has an Enya 45 (12 1/4 prop) with a 2' long muffler that's amazingly quiet. I stuffed a length of 3/4" heater hose with rolled up aluminum window screen. The hose is between the muffler halves. Bad news is half the power is gone!

Muffy stuffy

Steel wool will work to reduce noise, BUT depending on the grade of steel wool ( fine, med or coarse) there is a varying degree of fire hazard. Hot exhaust gasses WILL turn fine or superfine steel wool to a glowing ball in short order and spew sparks from exhaust - been there, done that ! Not only that, it tends to clog quickly with oil if used on a glow engine. Steel wool is really only OK for an intake air filter. Window screen is a better choice, but be sure to get metal screen, not fibreglass ( I know it seems obvious, BUT). However, it can be VERY difficult to install if your muffler does not come apart. It can be rolled up, but needs to be installed in such a way that the exhaust gasses have to pass through the screen mesh. To roll it up and insert lengthwise in a cylindrical muffler will do little other than add weight. The elusive goal is to diffuse the exhaust pulses while at the same time minmizing restriction. Exhaust back pressure = power loss, generally unless we want to delve into tuning principles, etc & I don't want to go there on a posting! Good luck!
