David, you are totally incorrect. Your planes rock!!! I mean that. Anyone can go down to the local hobby shop, pick up an arf, bolt it together and go fly their plane that is worth hundreds if not thousands of dollars. They can crash it and go buy another one.

Now, for someone like yourself, who's flying on a budget, to ask as many questions as you do, put together a spad, with a bunch of stuff you have handy and then go and and fly 3D with it, with a hand that's been badly bitten by a prop!!! That my friend takes dedication and a love of the hobby.

I'm sorry to hear about your servo. And your glow plug issues. What glow plugs are you running. i know you said the orange package, but what brand and number. Maybe there is one that works better. I don't know your engine, but maybe there is a better plug you can use?

Good Luck with it.

Engine quits

Hi Planeswithwings,

If all the above has been done, your glow plugs and engine should work OK. I'm getting the impression you are on your own, and there is no one to help - but I'm not sure. If possible, you should try and find someone with experience to look over your setup for you - a second pair of eyes always helps.

I'll list some things that you may want to look at.

Blowing glow plugs can be caused by:
Wrong range of glow plug
Leaving glow igniter on a long time when tuning/setting up engine
Using wrong battery for glow igniter - it should be a NiCd (1.2 volt) not a dry cell (1.5 volt) nor wet cell (2 volt)
Running engine too lean
Contamination in fuel
Old fuel

Quitting in the air can be caused by:
Foam in fuel (vibration caused by out of balance prop, fuel tank not isolated by vibration dampening foam)
Fuel tank too low
Fuel pickup in tank hitting end, or not staying at bottom of tank
Restriction in fuel delivery system
Not enough exhaust pressure in tank
Exhaust and intake fuel lines reversed
Old fuel
Air leak in fuel line

Difficulty in adjusting engine can be caused by air leak (at needle valve, base of carb or back plate)

Can you tell us:
1. The percentage of nitro in your glow fuel
2. Type of glow igniter battery you are using
3. Name and number of your glow plug
4. Is there foam in your fuel line when running full throttle on the ground

glow plugs

Hi Planeswithwings,

I found these two links that talk about glow plugs, heat ranges and problems.

Hope they help.
