I am using mostly hand cut vinyl. My local sign shop is also a flyer and helps me with quite a few scraps. I am working on getting them to stay sealed to the plane. After many hours of flying the fuel gets under them. I am trying a few ways to clear coat them. I have had good test results with miniwax urathane coating. I really have to get out. I hope to be up have this tested soon. hopefully we have some good weather over the holidays.

Good question. The way I've always done it to print onto Avery Full Sheet Label paper #05165. Cover with clear packing tape and seal the edge with med ca after you're stuck it to the plane. My DVII wings are covered that way. I've printed directly onto vinyl too but you still have to seal the ink with packing tape. Also, the vinyl is really hard on the printer and tends to jam up. Some sign shops will print anything you want on to vinyl but the clear top lamination adds to the thickness and it's expensive.

Gary's talking about a laser printer here. Vinyl does not accept inkjet ink at all. The avery label stock in his picture was done on inkjet though.

I use the same technique if I am covering my plane with vinly. If however you are painting your model, before you peel and stick the inkjet decal, mist it with clear coat water based polyurethane. Apply it very sparingly at first (by spray only of course) or the colours will run. After the fist light coat dries, the ink will be locked in. When you apply the decal to your plane, cover the whole thing with clear coat water based urethane and its guaranteed to remain fuelproof.
