Hi does anyone know where I can find a steam engine to put in an airplane? Got a big lump of coal in my Christmas sock ,so why not use it to fire up a new project with steam power. My big question is where in the heck did the Wife find the coal . Anyways have your self a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Henson's Aerial Carriage or Ader's Eole?

The only two model steam engines I know of are the Heritage and the Model VI, both by Midwest Products Co. They're designed for boats and I don't think they work well in a plane. They don't have a regulator either so no speed control. Some custom home build steamers have regulators but can, er, expload if your not careful. A bit like an overcharged Lipo would, except with a lot more shrapnel.

If you want to make a 'realistically flying' steamer plane, (as none ever 'flew') I'd go with a geared electric setup. You want something with high power and torque at low rpm. Even a smaller glow four stroke. Using conventional model engines/motors is a lot easier.

Or you could lookinto the liquified coal technology..I think they were experimenting with it in gas turbines....

The sooner you fall behind, the more time you will have to catch up.

I should sail right on past that notion, if I were you. I operate a 26 ft. steamboat on the river here in town and I can assure you that steam power isn't practical for an AC. By its very nature a steam boiler is a heavy thing, not to mention dangerous if it gets out of control.
