Lets see if I can remember.

1. prime the plane.
2. sand down to just above the fibers (cloth, fibre glass whatever)
3. lay your chart line tape down for making the panel lines
4. prime over the plane again
5. sand down to the top of the tape
6. pull the tape off
7. taa daa, panel lines
8. lay down your finishing colours

If I've miss anything, please add to it!! I'm not sure if I remember everything correctly!! and I'm going to have to do this soon!!

Hi Mike.

Planecrazy's method works well with very careful sanding. I found this method takes a lot of work and when all is done, may not show the lines well. (most likely the way I did it as I don't have the patience to sand so carefully). Also, you will be adding quite a bit of primer to get it to the level of the tape.

I found an easier and lighter method to be:
- fill, sand and prime aircraft as normal before painting. (I used cheap red-oxide primer to do the filling)
- Once priming is complete, mark and lay out panel lines (I used a lazer level to get my lines straight)
- Add 1/16" pinstriping tape as panel lines. To make the pinstripes, I use the Monokote's Smart Stripe cutter to make my panel lines (see pic).
- spray a final light coat of light gray primer over the complete airframe/panel lines. This way paint applied will adhere to the pinstriping tape and the base color is even for the final coat of color paint.
- paint as normal

The panel lines are "raised" but the effect still looks authentic and will show up even with more than one layer of paint if applied.

This method is easy and doesn't require you to sand as much.
