thrust line

I am building a four star forty. In the instructions it tells you to mark the center line and the thrust line on the fire wall and then mount the engine accordingly. I assume that the thrust line should line up with the center of the propeller. Can any one tell me if this is correct? The instructions are rather vague.

Without seeing the instructions or the plans I am guessing that it is the vertical and horizontal centre lines that have to be marked.

This is ignoring any engine offset or up/down thrust that may be built in.

[quote="Ed Smith"]Without seeing the instructions or the plans I am guessing that it is the vertical and horizontal centre lines that have to be marked.

I am going to revive this thread because I have the same problem. The instructions are very clear to mark the VERTICAL CENTRE LINE and the THRUST LINE not the horizontal centre line.

So now the question is.......the X that is formed where these 2 lines intersect.....does that indicate where the centre of the propeller shaft should be???

You are being told to use the vertical center so that's easy. If you look at the fuselage side view of your model, the thrust line is the line drawn through the center of crankshaft of the engine extending to the rear of the fuselage assuming no down thrust is to be used. The point where this line crosses the firewall is your horizontal reference for engine mounting purposes.

As far as I know, the 4 star doesn't have a cowl. If that is the case, the question is more a cosmetic one, rather than a functional one. You can center the engine on the firewall, or, offset it a bit to the left so that the prop is centered on the nose.

Does this kit use engine mount rails, or an engine mount?

If it uses rails, align the engine and push it over to the left a bit to get a centered prop.

Same idea if it's an engine mount, but the thrust offsets should be build into the firewall, and the engine can literally be mounted in any orientation that the engine will fit. The only consideration would be the vertical placement of the prop.
