Even just install it as a slave drive in another system, as long as it can read the disk format (NTFS, FAT32, FAT16, etc) you should be able to get the data back, unless it was an actual head crash that destroyed the surface, and that is relatively rare these days.

Yes Dave that is correct.

You can do it as a slave but it won't always work.

I have seen different makes of drives that won't work together as slave and master.

In addition to that rare problem, you also need to set the jumpers on the drives involved.

You also have to remove the hard drive from the machine to get at the jumpers and reconnect the cables and power to the drive.

Too much work for my liking.

Better to get the external USB case and then you will have a backup drive that you can use to prevent the data loss inthe first place.

You could partition the hard drive but that isn't as good as you are still using the same hard drive.

There are lots of other options but this is easy to do.

Thanks for the advise guys, I really wanted my e-mail contacts, most of the other stuff, such as the manuals for my kits are hardcopied, so photo stat copies are not a problem. This also made me redesign my business data base, I had been putting it off, but now it sort of made me do it. The data bases are re-designed and save not only on the hard disk, but on an external drive that I just bought, a jump drive and copied onto my laptop. Lets see something happen now.......

Again thanks for the advise, I'll cetainly keep that in mind if this happens again....just change the drive and use another computer, why didn't I think of that....

John, if you want to try the external drive routine, I've got an Adaptec USB unit that you can borrow. Just have to make sure that the drive is set up as "master" on the pin set and that it's an IDE drive (probably is if the computer's a few years old).

Send me a PM if you're interested.
