you need a short stub strut to replace the nose gear strut. put a steering arm on the bottom, then run a flex push rod back to your water rudders

Brew..that is a pull-pull system, and actually it works the best, but you need at least 4 expensive little pulleys to run the cables through.
What I was suggesting was a flexible pushrod such as this: http://www.greathobbies.com/products...prod_id=DUB343 They come in 48 and 36" lengths. Sullivan makes a very similar product as well. Because it is flexible, the outer casing witll have to be anchored down at each end, and a couple of places in the middle to prevent too much flexing. Keep any bends as shallow and as minimal as possible. If water gets inside - and it will - the inner rod tends to stick. I haven't tried this, but a dab of vaselene at each end my help keep the water out in the first place....

This is the set up that I used on my Goldberg Eagle 2. I used a Gold-n-rod because it is flexible and won't rust and bind up. It is supported in several places along the length. This set up fits the regular landing gear configuration and I can have it ready to go in less than 5 minutes. The top wheel collar on the nose gear is set so I don't have to play with the float incidence every time put them on. I hope this helps.

I would just us a short piece of 5/32 piano wire instead of the nose gear (DUB154) then attach the steering arm onto that. You can cut the push rod to length then you have to solder the threaded links onto the end.
Here is a close-up view of the steering. you can see the 5/32 piano wire with the steering arm on the end.

Here is a couple of photos with the floats setup on the plane. This set up is probably very similar to the one on your LT 40. I know it's not very "scale like" but I have flown it like this for many years now and it works great.
