They all work well, but like the guys said, if they are set to maximum security they are a pain. It's really just a matter of setting it to what you are comfortable with.

I used AVG for a year on my laptop for a year with no problems. I use my laptop for email etc. Do some surfing, and even let the wife use it sometimes (click happy girl that she is) never had an issue. It's free, isn't as resource hungry as Norton and seemed quite fine. Adaware scans are manually done periodically. I only used Norton for the other utilities once in a while.

I've am always cautious of what attachments I open, and watch for the tiny exe files etc. I'm behind a router, so it's a decent firewall. I see it gets pinged alot on the logs. Apparently, those are script kiddies doing their thing. For the 100 I paid for the router, it's probably my best defence against those that want my calssified documents.

I only got Norton as the wife feels safe with it. It's set and forget. And everything is done automatically. AVG isn't quite as mindless to use. It asked a few questions once in a while, and the wife doesn't have the patience for it.

I got the 3 licence Norton and installed it on all my computers. Since I've done that, all the machines are running ALOT slower it seems. Both of mine are set up for decent gaming so it's not the computers.

I blame everything on Norton, and I may end up removing it from one of them just to try it out again. That presents it's own problems, as Norton is not easy to install. I've done it in the past, but it protests the whole way. I've removed viruses with less painthan it takes to completely remove Norton.

Ex-Symantec employee here, and I used to really like Norton products, but I agree, its a hog.
Now I use Mcaffe(sp?), at home, way better and it works.

My office system runs NAV corp. and I got infected by a troyan that was 2/3 years old. Talks about crap. Too bad we have to run what the company runs.

I like Zone Alarm with it's anti-virus add-on. YMMV.

As another option to look at, I've been using PC-cillin from Trend Micro not sure how it compares to others but I've never had a problem.

I'm glad I never got norton because the one pc I tried to find a problem with, had it installed on it was a pain to do anything even after I reduced the settings to the minium
