Engine tuning for dummies

Okay I am getting frustrated so any tips would be helpful.

Here is some background.
Bergen 60 and I dropped in a OS 61 WC.
Had a terrible time trying to tune this thing it would be rich then lean I finally figured out it was tank height related. So I pulled the engine to inspect it as it had a few runs that went lean and it could use a piston and ring and a pump installed.
I drop in a spare engine I had that did not run very well in the winter figured I would give it another go. It is an older very low run time YS 61 ST. This is the older one with only 2 needles hover and sub which is the high needle.
To my amazement it started and ran pretty well set at the setting in the manual. I did a few mild circuits and since it has a pump it did not lean out under half tank. Next day I get it out figured it was time to dial it in a little. Do some hovering a full collective circuit, land and check back plate temp. The temp is cool can hold my figure on it all day long and it was bogging a little at full so I lean the sub needle a little. Go for another full collective circuit and flame out. I normally manage to do an ugly Auto but not this time. Set it down what seems very gently way out on the feild and as it touches down over it goes so I need a boom and fin.
At hover it smokes nicely runs cool and is pretty responsive. Full collective climbs can't see the smoke as it was way windy last weekend but it does seem to drop headspeed. The needles I figured were on the rich side as they are set to the manual, 1.5 hover and 2 sub main.

I have no experience with your engine, but...

1) Check your cluck line. a pin hole can show up first as a tuning problem, you chase the needles untill you have a flame out, or look at your clunk line. I've gotten into the habit of changing all my fuel lines every spring, after all its cheap insurance.

2) check you needles, if they have worn out O-rings they can suck air and you have probs. slip some fuel line over them to cover the seems and you'll no for sure. As well a bit of dirt in your carb can lodge in the spray bar causeing troubles.

3) Check everything else to make sure its not sucking air, back plate, carb to body O-ring (a dab of RTV here can cure a leak)

Hope that helps
