Is the choke really necessary for these engines? Why do some engines have them while most do not? Mine will be mounted inside a cowl and I am going to remove it if it is not required.

I have run many 4 strokes from a small OS .20 up to a Saito 150 and have never used the choke. With the glow driver NOT connected. Open the throttle wide open, put your finger over the end of the muffler and pull the prop through compression an couple of times. You will see fuel marching right up to the carb. Close the trottle after this and pull through compression a couple of more times and then connect the glow igniter. Bounce the prop backwards against compression and if the carb is set up right and the engine is broken in it should start right up.
