Tail feather mod for Parkzone J3 Cub

I recently bought the Parkzone J3 Cub as a plane I could fly on my own in between flying my glow trainer at the field. I haed heard some great things about the plane and got a deal at my LHS. The first few flights were great. But I was flying at a park that was probably a bit too small because I had to do a fair bit of turning to keep the plane out of "danger" i.e. trees and power lines.

I was reading some of the mods folks have done inlcuding re-hinging the tail feathers since the thin foam eventually cracks and causes control problems. I thought this was a great idea and so this past weekend (it was too windy to fly anything) I got some nylon hinges and went ahead with the mod. I tested the control surfaces and they seemed to be OK. The ruddder was a bit off of the suggested 3/8 throw but not too bad and the elevator at 1/4 seemed fine. I did a test flight Sunday evening when the winds finally calmed down and the plane flew very erratic and not really responding to the control inputs. Even with full left rudder it kept wanting to turn right and crash. It was a very different plane than when I first flew. I checked the wing and it was not off centre. I re-checked the control inputs and again on the ground seemed OK. But I wonder if the nylon hinges are a bit too rigid for the servos and even though the control surfaces move, in the air there's just too much force and the servos are too weak to handle the re-hinged control surfaces....is this possible?

I have since filled the nose with expandlible foam as has been suggested to strengthen it. It just doesn't fly well period. I can see how you can easily become discouraged. I am thinking of maybe just getting a new fuse and starting over and not touch anything for a while....mods are great but sometimes they just don't work for everyone I suppose.

If man were meant to fly he'd have been born with wings. That's why he invented Superglue.

The fuselage body is the weakness with that plane.

Just build anew one with 3/32 " balsa and paint it with art acrylic
Use a 1/8 ply firewall and a GWS gearbox if you like

We had about 80 flights on our Cub.Although it does turn slow, you can move the jumper in the receiver to increase the handleing. This was a great plane just left stock. The servos have more than enough power to move the control surfaces.Remember she flys slow, so when you turn with large throw she will fall off.I have 2 Batterys for the cub one with 8 charges the other 18 charges on them if you need them.Wayne
