I broke and lost the needle valve and housing for my OS46FX (in a crash!). The housing and backplate on that engine is made in one piece. Could I replace the needle valve and housing with one made for a OS46AX, since it is separate from the backplate?

I would say if the parts interchange... there should be no problem with it. The needle merely sets the fuel flow to the carburator for a proper mixture.
I would imagine almost any needle would work. As long as it fits or can be mounted properly.

Great hobbies or Hobby wholesale in Edmonton should have them in stock. Shouldn't take long to ship if the AX one doesn't work.

Make sure to get your reciever and servos checked out as well to make sure they weren't damaged in the crash

Cheers Rick

Oddly enough, I've had to recondition a 46FX after a terrain impact manoeuver...

The back plates themselves are not interchangeable, but you can buy the needle valve and bracket assembly for the AX, and install it on an FX.
Kill power on... doors coming open... wings level...clear to drop...
