Humble subjects still place well or win in many competitions. Where good sportsmanship prevails, no one should be too intimidated to compete. As far as expense goes it need not be prohibitive. I believe you can still build cheaper than you can buy once you cross a certain threshold.

Plan your material purchases in advance if plans/scratchbuilding. Going to the LHS with a BOM can often leave you SOL without making several trips.

I have a 1/5 pica WACO that is just in the bones. I was thinking of it. Lots of documentation seems to be on the net. but the actual plane I was hoping to modle it atfter seems to be hard to find a picture of. More insperation to keep looking., again great thread.

What a coincidence, I'm building a Pica 1/5 Waco right now. Not for competition though as I cant't claim I'm the only builder, I bought it, started.

This is my second Pica Waco, they a very nice flying aircraft. Send me the N # of the Waco you're looking for docs on and I'll see what I can dig up....
