Silver soldering

I need to do some silver soldering. I have the silver solder, now I need some flux. Is brazing flux the correct stuff to get? Also, will a propane torch be hot enough? Its only for doing small areas, (if this makes a difference).

Silver Solder

Propane is hot enough, brazing solder can work, but I prefer the liquid stuff. You can get it from some hobby shops and some welding supply houses.

Thanks, I will look for the "liquid stuff" as well and probably have a go with both.

It depends on the solder you purchase. If it came from a welding supply (the good stuff) then they sell a small jar which you dip the solder in when hot before applying. Sticks to it like a little ball and when you heat your metal it flows out. The name of mine is Techniweld low heat silver brazing flux.
If you bought the solder from a LHS then there is usually a little bottle included. I believe they call it Stay Brite which does not have the silver content of the previous and can be heated with an iron.
I use a small butane torch for small jobs that are now on the market which are very cheap compared to when I bought mine. For larger jobs I use a Bernzomatic with mapp gas and oxygen. Works great for modelling.
Hope this helps,
John Davidson

Flush everything off with water afterwards as the flux is acidic and will rust things up in a short time.
Tried for my kamikazi pilots licence. Flunked the test.
