Need Help Please: VMAX .46

Greetings all! My friend has a VMAX .46 that he is having problems with. When mixture is adjusted on the ground, seems to run fine. Once airborne after a few minutes it seems to fluctuate in power such that it is difficult to fly. Speeds between idle and half throttle appear to be ok but from + half to full power it will start to surge or fluctuate. I attempted to adjust the carb and ended up richening it up about half a turn, but still surges in the air. I have the VMAX .52 and have no problems (same carb)Any help would be appreciated.

I've had 2 cases with "wild" surging. Neither was engine related.
One was a faulty inline fail-safe, that would cause the servo to move back and forth. The other was a failing servo, that wouldn't stay neutral above the half way point and caused it to surge. Took a few days of head scatching for both, never thought of it 'not' being the engine.
Just something to check in case....
Check for broken, or pinhole in fuel line(s)
Check line inside tank too.
Hard to find pinholes, just replace lines w/ new.
Look for air bubbles when engine running at high speed.
