Template Material

Rather than make copies of my plans, cutting paper templates, and glueing them to wood, I've been using quilters template material; first from Michaels (too expensive) then Walmart. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, you lay the see thru plastic on top of your plans, draw the part onto the plastic, and use a hobby knife to score/cut the plastic. Voila, you have a template.

Alot of people know it as seetemp. It makes for better parts. Anyhow, I ran out of the template material. I went to Walmart in Milton to pick some up, but, the art section was renovated and they replaced my cheap template material with something much more expensive.

Last night, walking through Zeller, I noticed plastic folders for sale at $2 for 5. The plastic was EXACTLY the same material as the template stuff I was buying, just in different colours. Bought a pile of it and tried it last night; works great (even the black plastic can be used) plus the sheets are bigger allowing you to cut bigger parts on one sheet.

So, if you are looking for template material or buy seetemp, take a look at the plastic file folders at the local Walmart or Zellers. It's cheap and works great.

Just make sure you buy the plastic that has a bit of a rough texture; it allows you to use a pencil.

I just finished using the folders to finish of my templates of the pattern plane I'm building. My wife thought I was nuts using file folders till I told her that it would have cost me well over $50 to buy the same amount of material from Michaels.

Another source for this stuff is Dollarama stores.

They have what they call "Flexible Chopping Mats" in a package of 2 for $1.00. These are opaque mats meant to be used for chopping vegetables. They are about 11 1/4 inches wide and 15 inches long and appear to be about 1/32 thick. They have a rough texture so a pencil mark shows. They can be cut with a pair of scissors.

Give them a try, you might like it!!
