Pilot Kits

I am looking at buying a Pilot Kit for a 1/4 scale Cub but have no idea of the quality of these kits. Any comments on the quality of the Pilot kits would be appreciated. Alternatives would be a SIG or Balsa USA kit so comparisons of these kits to the Pilot kit would also be appreciated.

I believe their instructions were originally in japanese with some translations and photos. I would ask questions about the manual.
With a Sig kit, there are always people available to answer your questions.

Pilot kits were (are) very good quality. The materials and die cutting was as good as any. The instructions are a little terse and may a have a few amusing translation errors, but are suplemented by b/w photographs.

Here's a couple of scans from the Pilot Decathalon kit to give you an idea of what to expect.

I have built 2 Balsa USA 1/4 Scale J3 Cubs and have always found the quality very good. I have also found that the Balsa USA kit to be closer to scale outline than the Sig Kit but I can't comment on the Pilot as I have no experience with any of their kits.

I am currently completing my second Balsa USA Cub but this time I am doing some serious bashing to include exact scale features on the interior and exterior and so far its looking excellent!

These kits fly absolutely great and look so very realistic in the air, you'd swear it was a full sized aircraft!

I don't know the price of the Pilot kit but the Balsa USA kit is listed at $180 USD plus shipping from the US of course. If you go to the Toledo RC show in April Balsa USA will be there and offer their kits at a special show price. There the Cub will be approx $150 - $160 and you won't have to pay the taxes or the shipping!

My next kit building project will be the Balsa USA 1/3 Scale Cub.

If you want to see some pics of my project, go to the Scale Aircraft forem and click on the title: J3 Cub - Completing my Dream.
